Production of Ammonium Acetate

Generally, Ammonium Acetate is obtained in two methods:

  1. By neutralizing acetic acid with ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3)  or
  2. By saturating glacial acetic acid (CH3COOH) with ammonia (NH3).

Ammonium Acetate Chemical Reactions

It functions as a precursor to acetamide. The reaction is as follows:

NH4CH3CO2 → CH3C(O)NH2 H2O

Also, it is used as a diuretic.

Health Hazards

Inhaling dust irritates the mouth and nose. Swallowing this compound irritates the stomach and mouth. When it comes in contact with eyes and skin can cause rashes.

Uses of Ammonium Acetate

  • Ammonium acetate is commonly used as a food-acidifying agent. It changes or controls the alkalinity or acidity of the food. It is commonly employed in the Knoevenagel condensation technique as a catalyst. During biosynthesis, the Borch reaction uses the molecule as one of the sources of ammonia.
  • A protein-precipitation reagent is prepared by combining ammonium acetate with fully distilled water.
  • The substance can also be used as a mobile phase in ESI (electrospray ionization) mass spectrometry of molecules and proteins, as well as in HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography).
  • Ammonium acetate is more effective as a diuretic. Because ammonium acetate is unstable at low pressure, it is used to replace cell buffers with a variety of non-explosive salts in the processing of mass spectrometry samples.
  • It is used in making explosives.
  • Foam rubber is made with this material.
  • It is used to keep meat fresh.
  • Vinyl plastic is made of this material.
  • Ammonium acetate is used in a variety of agricultural products.
